Within the process of creating is where my heart lies. My process is direct and uncomplicated, my work–simple and functional. I spend much of my studio time working outdoors. In this way, I am able to achieve a more intimate connection with the environment, as most of my work is inspired by the things that I find there. Both my pottery and my sculpture are expressions of things that I love to examine outdoors. I am fascinated by contrast, and continually explore relationships between both visual and tactile contrast, the repetition of texture and pattern in nature, as well as the use of one object to create the illusion of another. My work is a response to the stillness within nature, and a true expression of gratitude for all things that I find there.
Teaching has always been an integral part of my enthusiasm in art. As I instruct my students through various exercises, I learn more about how I, myself, understand and respond to the materials.
